Yannick Agnel breaks short-course world record

Two-time London gold medalist Yannick Agnel, who anchored the French team to a 4x100m free victory against Phelps, Lochte, and the gang, is back in the pool and already breaking world records.

Agnel bested Paul Biedermann’s previous 400m free short-course mark by more than a half second Thursday at the French championships, clocking a time of 3:32.25 that’s nearly eight seconds faster than his personal best in the event.

Even better: Biedermann’s record was originally set in 2009 when he was wearing a high-tech body suit that has since been banned from competition.

“It’s super. I’ve beaten a record set in a bodysuit,” Agnel told the Associated Press. “It shows there are still many good things to be done in terms of times.”

The world record was a career first for the 20-year-old, who now owns nine European championships, one world championship, and three Olympic medals. Don’t let his boyish smile fool you; he’ll be serious threat to the U.S. swimming team in 2016.

As expected the U.S. took gold in both men’s and women’s basketball, with the men winning their third consecutive Olympic gold medal and the women running their streak to six straight. But there was a lot more to take in at the basketball venues, including Serbia’s men’s team winning their first Olympic basketball medal (as an independent nation), and Spain doing the same in the women’s bracket.
