Prince Willem-Alexander leaving IOC to start new life… as King

Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander is quitting his post as a committee member of the IOC to take on a slightly taller task: King of the Netherlands.

He’s been an IOC member since 1998 and, even though his resignation can’t become official until a September meeting in Buenos Aires, his mother, Queen Beatrix, announced Monday that she’s abdicating her role in favor of the prince come April 30. So now seems a good time to move on.

“It is with no small regret that we accept his resignation from the IOC, but we are equally as enthusiastic to wish him well as he enters the next important stage of his life,” Rogge said in a statement. “The global sports community is grateful for his contributions over the years and the Olympic Movement will always receive the Crown Prince warmly as a true friend of sport.”

We assume this won’t slow his desire to see the Summer Olympics return to Amsterdam in 2028 for the 100-year anniversary of its last Olympics, and could arguably help his case.

As expected the U.S. took gold in both men’s and women’s basketball, with the men winning their third consecutive Olympic gold medal and the women running their streak to six straight. But there was a lot more to take in at the basketball venues, including Serbia’s men’s team winning their first Olympic basketball medal (as an independent nation), and Spain doing the same in the women’s bracket.
