Just ahead of Jordan Burroughs match against Russia’s Saba Khubetzhty, which Burroughs won to go 53-0 in his international career, the London Olympic 74kg champ chatted with NBC’s Jimmy Roberts about what events like “Rumble on the Rails” mean amid the effort to save Olympic wrestling.
“Huge events like this are awesome. I think we don’t gain a lot of notoriety or exposure from American media, so I think today is a great day for the sport of wrestling. We got some high flying matches, some entertainment. We just need to add a little bit of flair… kind of with an MMA style to it.”
The U.S. fell to world No. 1 Iran 6-1 early in the day, but routed the Russians 8-1, as international wrestling fans and celebrities showed up en masse to support wrestling’s bid to remain in the Games.
Hamburg will not continue its bid to host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, withdrawing from the race after a public referendum was held.
If over 50% of the voters in Hamburg had voted in support of the Olympic bid they would have stayed in race. However, the New York Times reported that of the 650,000 votes that were cast, 51.7% were against the bid.
Olaf Scholz, the mayor of Hamburg, said, “This is a decision that we did not have liked but it is clear.”
A public referendum also ended Munich’s bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Germany has not hosted a Games since 1972.
The cities that remain in contention to host the 2024 Olympics are Los Angeles, Budapest, Paris and Rome. None of these plan to hold public referendums.
The 2024 host city will be selected on September 13th, 2017 at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Lima, Peru.
Mikaela Shiffrin will look for another win on the final day of the Aspen World Cup. After yesterday’s historic slalom victory, Shiffrin will race slalom again at 3:00 P.M. ET, airing live on NBC and streaming on NBC Sports Live Extra.
Slovakia’s Veronika Velez Zuzulova and Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter, who took second and third behind Shiffrin yesterday, will also be racing again.
The World Cup organizers typically do not schedule slalom races on consecutive days, but a canceled event earlier in the season caused the extra slalom to be added to the Aspen event.
