U.S. men’s curling eliminated from playoff contention

A near-miss on the final shot of the match denied the U.S. men’s curling team from advancing into the semifinals today.

American skip John Shuster’s draw shot stopped near a Team Canada stone by the button, but the latter stone was closer by less than an inch.

With that, the Canadians held on for the 8-6 win and have earned their own semifinal berth as they can only finish as worse as 6-3 in a tie with Great Britain and Norway; they would qualify on head-to-head records.

The U.S. men now join the women’s side as teams eliminated from playoff contention; the women suffered that fate yesterday in a narrow 7-6 loss to Sweden.

As expected the U.S. took gold in both men’s and women’s basketball, with the men winning their third consecutive Olympic gold medal and the women running their streak to six straight. But there was a lot more to take in at the basketball venues, including Serbia’s men’s team winning their first Olympic basketball medal (as an independent nation), and Spain doing the same in the women’s bracket.
