Czech Martina Sablikova wins gold in women’s 5000m, only slightly limits Dutch dominance

The Dutch speed skating dominance continued for the most part with the women’s 5000m … except when it came to the gold. That went to the Czech Republic’s Martina Sablikova, who won her second medal in Sochi and fifth overall with a time of 6:51.54 on Wednesday.

If that medal count didn’t solidify the notion that this wasn’t exactly an upset, consider the fact that Sablikova now has two consecutive gold medals in the women’s 5000m. Here’s her medal haul as of this writing:

5000m gold; 3000m silver

5000m gold, 3000m gold and 1500m bronze.

The 26-year-old debuted in 2006 but couldn’t finish better than fourth in any event.

The Dutch shouldn’t be too upset, however. Ireen Wuest’s silver and Carien Kleibeuker’s bronze give the Netherlands an astounding 21 medals in speed skating, with the possibility of more coming on Wednesday.
