U.S. middle-distance phenom Mary Cain withdrew from the World Indoor Championships on Monday due to a calf injury

“Over the past week, I developed a discomfort in my lower calf,” Cain said in a statement, according to USA Track and Field. “I had an MRI scan on Saturday and it was all clear,  but I still feel the pain when I wear spikes and have decided not to risk making it worse in Poland.”

Cain, 17, had won the 1500m at the U.S. Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 23 to qualify for the world meet in Sopot, Poland, beginning Friday.

She was the youngest member of the U.S. roster headed to Poland and arguably its most recognizable woman. Cain made history last year, becoming the youngest American to compete at the World Outdoor Championships, where she finished 10th in the 1500m.

Cain will be replaced by Heather Kampf on the World Indoor Championships team.

As expected the U.S. took gold in both men’s and women’s basketball, with the men winning their third consecutive Olympic gold medal and the women running their streak to six straight. But there was a lot more to take in at the basketball venues, including Serbia’s men’s team winning their first Olympic basketball medal (as an independent nation), and Spain doing the same in the women’s bracket.
