Simone Biles chooses UCLA

If Simone Biles is looking to make the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team, she made a wise college choice.

Biles, a rising, home-schooled high school senior and the reigning World all-around champion, has indicated she will attend UCLA. She said in April that she was considering UCLA or Alabama and that she would delay enrollment by one year, until after the Rio 2016 Olympics.

At least one member of each of the last four U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics teams has attended UCLA, including 2012 gold medalist Jordyn Wieber (who can’t compete collegiately because she turned pro) and 2008 silver medalist Samantha Peszek, who still has college eligibility left.

Athens 2004 Olympic silver medalist Mohini Bhardwaj competed at UCLA before making her only Olympic team. Three members of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team that won bronze competed for UCLA after the Sydney Games — Tasha SchwikertJamie Dantzscher and Kristen Maloney.

Biles, who won the Secret Classic all-around Saturday in her first competition of the year, is the favorite heading to the P&G Championships in Pittsburgh from Aug. 21-24.

As expected the U.S. took gold in both men’s and women’s basketball, with the men winning their third consecutive Olympic gold medal and the women running their streak to six straight. But there was a lot more to take in at the basketball venues, including Serbia’s men’s team winning their first Olympic basketball medal (as an independent nation), and Spain doing the same in the women’s bracket.
