Olympic atmosphere at Ryder Cup

American Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love III, never played in the Olympics. How could he? Golf was last in the 1904 Games and won’t make its triumphant return until Rio in 2016 (also, praise the Lord).

But even if the sport has been absent from the Olympics landscape for more than a century, Love says the international competition between the American and European teams always has similarly spirited atmosphere.

“Our whole country is interested, because it’s the U.S. team. We just went through an Olympics, and this is becoming like the Olympics for America,” Love told reporters Wednesday. “They realize that our team is going up against an unbelievable team from Europe and they want to see what happens.”

Makes you wonder if throwing a similar Ryder Cup style team event into the Olympics, in addition to the standard 72-stroke play individual tournament, wouldn’t be a bad idea. Hmmmm….

If that happens, we’ll have our money on Rory McIlroy and whichever flag he’ll be golfing for in Rio. The 2012 PGA champ still hasn’t decided if he’ll play for Ireland or Team GB, but we’re sure he’ll be pummeled with questions about it all weekend.
