In a race marred by Lindsey Vonn’s injury, fog delays, and plenty of DNFs, World Cup points leader and two-time Olympic silver medalist Tina Maze of Slovenia provisionally won the world super-G championships Tuesday in Schladming, Austria.
Maze clocked a time 1:35.39 to hold off Lara Gut of Switzerland by only 0.38 seconds. American Julia Mancuso was third. The race was postponed for about three-and-a-half hours due to heavy fog.
“I think my performance was solid,” Maze said after winning her second worlds gold. “I attacked well, but it wasn’t easy to manage the wait before the race. I tried to stay focused and determined.”
Mancuso was happy with her bronze despite the fact that she knows the course well and “could have run better,” but added that it was difficult to get back on the hill after watching Vonn crash just ahead of her run.
