The U.S. women’s hockey team topped the Swiss 5–0 in Ottawa Friday to advance out to the IIHF world championships group stage and head toward the playoff round in pretty good standing.
Alex Carpenter led off scoring with a power play goal in the opening period, and Brianna Decker added two more as the Swiss followed their 13-0 loss to Canada Wednesday night by getting shut-out again.
The U.S. will now wait to see who wins the game between Canada and the perennial third place finishers from Finland, who could knock out the defending champs with an upset win Friday night.
Germany took care of the Czechs earlier in the day to finish second in Group-B to Russia despite losing two of their three preliminary round games and being outscored 11-7 by their opponents. They’ll face the winner of Group-A in the quarters on Saturday.
