The bad news keeps pouring in for Turkish athletes.
Riza Kayaalp, one of two Turkish men to medal at the London Olympics, may face investigations from both the International Olympic Committee and wrestling’s governing body after derogatory and profane tweets, reports the Hurriyet Daily News in Turkey.
Kayaalp, an Olympic bronze medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling in 2012, made insensitive tweets about Armenians and Greeks, according to nationalturk.com.
The tweets were in reference to widespread anti-government protests in Turkey last month.
After the June 8 tweets, Kayaalp carried the Turkish flag at the opening ceremony of the Mediterranean Games on June 20.
Turkey is already dealing with a track and field doping scandal that could see it thrown out of the world championships in August.
The news could be a blow to Istanbul’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics. It’s one of three finalists — with Madrid and Tokyo — up for the vote in September.
