Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan is all-in on quadruple jumps ahead of the Sochi Olympics.
Chan, 22 and the three-time reigning world champion, is opening his long program for the 2013-14 season with back-to-back quadruple jumps, he told the Toronto Star.
“We thought it’d be best to put out both quads … right away so that I can kind of relax in the footwork,” Chan told the newspaper. “I don’t have to think about any other jump after that … and it’ll bring the audience to their feet (right away).”
It’s nothing new for Chan, who has reportedly put combination four-revolution jumps at the beginning of his long program before, but not at the Olympics.
Chan placed fifth as a 19-year-old at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver without attempting a quad. He’ll likely be the favorite for gold in Sochi, despite the potential presence of two Olympic champions on comebacks — Evgeni Plushenko and Evan Lysacek.
“I think I’m the biggest contender for a gold medal at the Olympics,” Chan told the newspaper. “It’s crazy how much I’ve changed and evolved as an athlete. It’s all coming together; I’m kind of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”
