The world’s biggest soccer star is promoting Madrid 2020 after all.
FC Barcelona striker Lionel Messi donned a Madrid 2020 shirt and praised the city’s Olympic bid in a video published by the bid’s organizers Tuesday. Last week, it was reported Messi turned down the chance to appear in a promo video for Madrid via his agents.
Madrid is going up against Istanbul and Tokyo in a Saturday vote to determine the host of the 2020 Olympics. Messi certainly shouldn’t feel obligated to support Madrid 2020, given he’s not Spanish and plays for Real Madrid’s biggest rival, but he did anyway.
“Messi never refused to support the Madrid bid,” Madrid 2020 president Alejandro Blanco said in the video. “There was a problem of time, a problem due to his activity because he was training and we were touring around the world.”
Messi, an Olympic gold medalist with Argentina in 2008, said he didn’t know whether his support will help or not, but he hopes it does. See all of his comments in the video below.
