Aloha, curling!
Honolulu will host two curling events on Oct. 17 at the Ice Palace (interesting name for an Aloha State arena) and raise money for a local hospital. 2010 U.S. Olympic curling team members John Benton and Tracy Sachtjen will be part of the festivities, coaching teams and conducting clinics.
In conjunction with the new Hawaii Curling Club, American Savings Bank brought together 16 sponsored teams of six who will play in the state’s first Charity Curling Classic.
It’s the first known curling event in Hawaii, according to USA Curling.
“Believe it or not, it has long been a goal of ours to bring the Olympic sport of curling to Hawaii,” said Rick Patzke, USA Curling chief operating officer. “The 50th state of the United States has now become the 45th state with curling activity.”
Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and West Virginia are the five states yet to learn that curling rocks.
