Two-time Olympian Ryan Hall withdrew from the New York City Marathon with a hip injury, it was announced Tuesday.
“In my zealous efforts to have redemption in this year’s ING New York City Marathon, I overstepped the first and most important rule — making it to the line healthy,” Hall said in a press release. “A long string of very aggressive training has aggravated my hip and it has not been able to fully calm down, such that I don’t think racing on it is wise. I am very disappointed that I won’t be lining up on November 3rd as I had so looked forward to, but I am refocusing now on getting back to 100 percent and going after some big goals in 2014. Redemption will have to wait, but it will be all the more sweet.”
Hall, 31, has been plagued by injuries since failing to finish the 2012 Olympic marathon in London.
He previously withdrew from the Oct. 6 San Jose Half Marathon due to a training setback. He also pulled out of the 2012 New York City Marathon due to “a string of nagging injuries” before the race was canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.
Hall was second at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, 10th at the 2008 Olympics and placed fourth at the 2009 New York City Marathon. Hall joins fellow U.S. Olympian Kara Goucher in missing this year’s event. Goucher withdrew with a foot injury last month.
Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai and Ethiopian Firehiwot Dado will attempt to defend their 2011 titles on Nov. 3.
The top U.S. men’s hope is Eritrean-born Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi, who won the New York City Marathon in 2009.
