Paralympic powerlifter’s ex-girlfriend spiked drink with steroid

The International Paralympic Committee overturned a lifetime ban for a powerlifter after his ex-girlfriend said she spiked his drink with an anabolic steroid.

Gunduz Ismayilov of Azerbaijan tested positive for stanozolol before the 2004 Athens Paralympics. It was the second offense for the 2000 Paralympic champion, so he was banned for life.

His ex-girlfriend, who also competed in Athens, admitted in a Baku court that she sabotaged his drink in the Paralympic Village. The two had separated in 2003

“She had spiked the drink as a form of punishment,” according to the IPC.

“This is a very unique case with a unique set of circumstances,” Dr. Toni Pascual, chair of the IPC Anti-Doping Committee, said in an IPC press release.
