Noelle Pikus-Pace continued her dominating start to the skeleton season, and this time she hasn’t been disqualified.
The American won a World Cup event in her native Park City, Utah, with a two-run time of 1 minute, 39.54 seconds. She broke the track record in her first run by .11 of a second and then went .06 faster in her second.
“This has been incredible, a track record,” Pikus-Pace said. “I’ve been chasing this for 15 years, since I started the sport.”
Great Britain’s Lizzy Yarnold was second in 1:40.22. Canada’s Sarah Reid took third.
Pikus-Pace also had the fastest two-run time in the season-opening World Cup in Calgary, Alberta, last week. There, she was disqualified for having too much tape on her sled in a post-race inspection.
Pikus-Pace said Great Britain protested her original win, but later reports said that didn’t happen. Yarnold moved from second to first with the DQ.
“When we go through hard times, we have a choice to make,” Pikus-Pace said. “We can either let it get us down, or we can push forward and see what we are made of.”
Pikus-Pace, 30, is the 2007 world champion who finished fourth at the 2010 Olympics and second at the World Championships in February. She briefly retired after the Olympics and had a baby boy.
American Katie Uhlaender, the 2012 world champion, finished 14th after taking 12th in Calgary. She said last week she was waiting for symptoms to subside from a concussion she suffered in preseason training.
Russian Aleksander Tretiakov won the men’s skeleton race earlier, making up a two-tenths deficit on Latvian Martins Dukurs after the first run. He won in 1:37.59, .12 ahead of Dukurs and reversing the top two from Calgary.
American Matt Antoine took bronze, his first World Cup medal since January 2012.
The skeleton World Cup continues in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Dec. 15.
