American John Teller notched his first World Cup win of the ski cross season in Val Thorens, France, on Friday, putting him in strong position to be named to the U.S. Olympic Team.

Teller, 30, is the reigning world bronze medalist in ski cross, an event that made its Olympic debut in 2010. Teller just missed the 2010 Olympic Team, which included fellow converted Alpine skiers Daron Rahlves and Casey Puckett, who were eliminated before the quarterfinals.

Two top-three results in selection events were needed to gain an automatic berth on the U.S. Olympic Team, but nobody has met that criteria in men’s or women’s ski cross. Teller, who has also been an auto mechanic and high school football coach, is the only American man or woman to make a podium this World Cup season.
