Martin Fourcade wins gold; Ole Einar Bjoerndalen falls just short of 13th medal in 12.5km pursuit

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen will need to wait to break his tie for the most medals won in the Winter Olympics.

French biathlete Martin Fourcade began to justify the heavy hype he brought into Sochi, winning gold in the 12.5km pursuit on Monday.

Fourcade’s countryman Jean Guillaume Beatrix took the bronze while Czech skier Ondrej Moravec was the silver winner.

Bjoerndalen didn’t miss that tie-breaking 13 medal by much, either, as he trailed Beatrix by just 1.7 seconds while coming in fourth. Then again, at 40, that margin of defeat may very well haunt the Norwegian icon if he cannot win a medal in another discipline during 2014.

For now, Bjoerndalen stays at 12.
