Headline writers dreaming of “Gold wins gold” one-liners won’t be able to do so in regard to the snowboard halfpipe competition, as Taylor Gold failed to make the top six in the semifinals on Tuesday.
That doesn’t mean Shaun White can totally exhale, as some other contenders did advance. The most obvious is U.S. snowboarder Greg Bretz (pictured), who holds a rare win over the icon in his most iconic event.
Iouri “I-Pod” Podladtchikov (Switzerland) also advanced thanks to his semifinals-topping 87.50 score. (Bretz came in second with 83.00.)
Rounding out the six bound for the finals: Australia’s Kent Callister, Slovenia’s Tim-Kevin Ravnjak and Chinese snowboarders Yiwei Zhang and Wancheng Shi.
