Shaun White made a strong argument that he’s still on top of the halfpipe head with his top score in qualifiers. Some of the biggest threats to his claim on a third gold will have to pass an upcoming semifinal round if they want to foil that bid.

The top six of 12 snowboarders will advance to the finals, with the best of two runs being counted as their score.
At least three of those 12 have a reasonable chance at a medal. U.S. skateboarder Greg Bretz is the first to beat White in a halfpipe event in ages while fellow countryman Taylor Gold (pictured) is another guy to watch.
Swiss snowboarder Iour Podladtchikov (aka “I-Pod”) is the other big name. His “YOLO” flip is an example of the kind of tricks that push White to higher heights.
