Good news for U.S. bobsled fans: Steven Holcomb says his injured calf is improving ahead of the Americans’ Olympic title defense in four-man this weekend at Sanki Sliding Center.
Holcomb strained his calf muscle at the start of the second run during the two-man competition, in which he and Steven Langton won the bronze and the first U.S. two-man medal of any kind since the 1952 Winter Games.
He required overnight and race-day treatment for the injury in order to compete the next day. But as of now, Holcomb says he’s healing up.
Today, he took part in training runs with the USA-1 team that were only the 17th and 16th-fastest. But speed wasn’t so much the point of those runs; it was about making progress with his injury.

Yesterday, he talked about the four-man competition and how he hoped that he’d be getting something even better than bronze.
“It’s going to be a good race, and the Russians are going to be fast again,” he said in a team release. “They know this track better than anybody. The Latvians are fast, the Germans are fast, the Brits are fast, the Swiss are fast.
“The list goes on, but it’s a tough four-man field. Luckily, we’re fast too, so I feel pretty good and I know my team is chomping at the bit to get going.”
