The 18-year-old is expected to take gold in the event, but she needs to finish things off with that second run. Some big names are right behind her, as Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch and Slovenia’s Tina Maze are behind her at second and third respectively. Austria’s Bernadette Schild and Marlies Schild and France’s Nastasia Noens round out the top six.

If the Lindsey Vonn comparisons don’t move you, Shiffrin can round out a team effort in U.S. Alpine skiing. If she can hold on four at least a medal, that will make for five different U.S. Alpine skiers reaching the podium at Sochi, matching a U.S. record stemming from 1984.

Both Hoefl-Riesch and Maze hope to land their third medals of this Olympics and fifth overall. Maze has two gold medals and carried two silvers into Sochi while Hoefl-Riesch won a gold and silver in 2014 and won two gold medals in Vancouver.
