Sochi is making headlines for being a ghost town these days, but the leader of the International Swimming Federation believes it could host one of his sport’s biggest events.
FINA president Julio Maglione called the just-completed Winter Games the best in history and said the Black Sea resort could host the 2020 World Short Course Championships, according to R-Sport.
“We were at the Olympics in Sochi,” he said. “The best Olympic Games in history were held there. Amazing competitions, an excellent team. Sochi could be an excellent place to hold the 2020 World Championships.”
The World Short Course Championships, held in even-numbered years in 25m pools, are not as big as the regular World Championships held in odd-numbered years in Olympic-size 50m pools. This year’s World Championships (25m) will be in Doha, Qatar, from Dec. 3-7.
Next year’s World Championships (50m pool) will be in Kazan, Russia, which hosted the World University Games last summer.
Sochi does not have a 25m pool in any of its six Olympic coastal venues, according to R-Sport. The city is slated to host Fed Cup tennis at the speed skating venue from April 19-20.
