Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe was released from a Sydney hospital, his manager said Wednesday, three weeks after it was reported he was battling a serious infection following recent shoulder surgery.

“It looks as though the infections have cleared up,” manager James Erskine said, according to Australian reports. “It can always re-infect as it’s done twice before, but we are hopeful.”

Erskine said three weeks ago that Thorpe’s condition was not life-threatening, but that the 31-year-old would probably never swim competitively again.

Thorpe won nine medals over the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, retired and attempted a comeback for the 2012 Olympics, failing to make the Australian team.

The swimmer recently admitted to struggles with depression and alcohol abuse and was in rehab earlier this year.
