U.S. Olympic hockey player Mark Pavelich‘s gold medal from the 1980 Lake Placid Games was auctioned for $262,900 on Friday.
Pavelich became the second member of the Miracle on Ice team to sell his gold medal. Mark Wells‘ gold went for $310,700 in November 2010. The auction house for Pavelich’s sale had expected “a floor” price of $250,000.
Miracle on Ice captain Mike Eruzione sold his stick from the U.S.-Soviet Union game in 1980 and his jersey from the final game against Finland to a 9-year-old boy named Seven last year, but not his gold medal.
Pavelich, 56, isn’t having financial troubles, a director of the auction house said.
