An Englishman named Chinu Xxx won a 125kg wrestling bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, as pointed out by @OlympicStatman.
Xxx was born in India and moved to Great Britain as a teenager.
Here’s how he got that interesting last name:
“It’s Chinu triple X for a reason,” a BBC commentator said during the bronze-medal match coverage. “It actually says that on his passport. When his parents took him in to the passport office, or to get his birth certificate, they said his name will be Chinu, and the passport office man decided that he put Xs to mark out the second part of his name, to say that he didn’t need a second name. But it was then registered as Chinu triple X.”
His last name is likely pronounced, “Singh,” because that’s how it’s spelled on his club team’s website.
“More like double XL, I think,” the BBC commentator said.
