Olympic short track speed skater Eddy Alvarez took the next step in his baseball career, getting promoted from the Arizona Rookie League to Class A in the Chicago White Sox system.

Alvarez, a Sochi 5000m relay silver medalist, signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox in June and played 27 games with the club’s Arizona League team before the promotion to the Kannapolis (N.C.) Intimidators of the South Atlantic League.

Alvarez, 24, was an all-conference Salt Lake Community College shortstop before taking up short track and making his first Olympic team for Sochi.

He hit .291 with his first two professional home runs and 12 RBI in the Arizona League, including an eight-game hitting streak near the end of July, prompting him to set a goal of being promoted by the end of the season.
