The Youth Olympics wouldn’t seem like a meeting place for long lost friends, given athletes are 18 and younger, but two women who last saw each other 12 years ago reunited in Nanjing.
Filipino gymnast Ava Lorein Verdeflor and Singapore shooter Martina Lindsay Veloso were separated from their play dates when Verdeflor’s family moved from Singapore when she was 3 years old, according to Olympic.org.
Verdeflor, now 15 and living near Dallas, and Veloso, now 14, knew that each other had qualified to compete in Nanjing, as their families still kept in touch. They finally reconnected in a dining hall.
“I think I saw her [one day], but I wasn’t really sure it was her and I would feel embarrassed if I approached the wrong person,” Veloso said, according to the report. “We were just talking about the last time [we were together] and whether either of us could remember anything. But unfortunately we couldn’t.”
