Austrian Thomas Morgenstern, a three-time Olympic champion, announced his retirement Friday, following a comeback from scary crashes to win silver at the Sochi Olympics.

Morgenstern, 27, won team ski jumping medals at three straight Olympics — gold in 2006 and 2010 and silver in Sochi. He also captured the individual large hill in 2006.

“I am making a jump into a new life, and I am looking forward to it,” Morgenstern said, according to The Associated Press. “I want all the positive memories to prevail.”

He’s Austria’s only Olympic individual ski jumping champion since 1992. Nordic combined skier Felix Gottwald was the only Austrian to win more Olympic medals, with seven, according to sports-reference.com.

Morgenstern was in serious doubt to reach his third Olympics in Sochi following scary crashes in December and January. He suffered skull and lung injuries in the latter spill (video here).
