The U.S. women’s basketball team broke the American record for largest margin of victory at a global championship, beating Angola 119-44 at the World Championships in Istanbul on Tuesday.
The previous record was a 70-point margin of victory over Senegal at the 1990 World Championships. The U.S.’ biggest blowout at the Olympics was 60 points, over Zaire, at Atlanta 1996.
The U.S. women are three wins from repeating as World champions and booking a spot in the 2016 Olympic tournament, which the U.S. men did earlier this month.
The Americans will play either Brazil or France in the quarterfinals Friday. France beat the U.S. 76-72 in a pre-Worlds exhibition game, marking the U.S.’ first loss since 2011. The U.S. topped France by 36 points in the 2012 Olympic gold-medal game.
Nneka Ogumwike led the U.S. with 18 points and 10 rebounds on Tuesday. Maya Moore (16 points), Brittney Griner (15 points, seven rebounds, three blocks), Seimone Augustus (15 points) and Angel McCoughtry (10 points) also scored in double figures.
