Olympic champion cross-country skier Petter Northug was sentenced to 50 days in jail Thursday after crashing his Audi while drunk driving on May 3.
Northug said after the sentencing he will be ashamed over what happened for the rest of his life, according to Norwegian reports.
Northug, who won four 2010 Olympic medals and two in Sochi, had a blood alcohol level more than eight times above the Norwegian legal limit, according to Reuters. The Norwegian limit is .02.
Northug was also fined $30,000 and banned from driving for life, “which normally means a minimum of five years,” according to The Associated Press.
The Norwegian Ski Association said it would not punish Northug because his accident “had nothing to do with competition or training,” according to the AP.
Northug, 28, aims to compete at the 2015 World Championships, according to reports.
