IOC wants ‘full explanation’ from Russian about ‘Williams brothers’ comments

Shamil Tarpischev

Russian IOC member Shamil Tarpischev will be contacted by the IOC for a “full explanation of his comments” about Venus and Serena Williams that led to the Russian being fined and suspended by the WTA Tour.

Tarpischev, also president of Russia’s tennis federation, called the Americans “the Williams brothers” and “scary” to look at on a Russian TV show Friday.

He apologized Saturday, saying the comments were taken out of context and he had no malicious intent.

The WTA Tour fined him $25,000 and banned him for a year.

Tarpischev, 66 and an IOC member since 1994, has not been punished by the IOC yet.

“The IOC will first contact Mr. Tarpishev to ask for his position before considering any next step,” an IOC spokesman said, according to insidethegames.
