Lindsey Vonn finished second in a World Cup super-G in Lake Louise, Alberta, on Sunday, completing her first weekend of races this year with two podium results.
“A solid day and a phenomenal weekend,” Vonn said, according to the U.S. Ski Team.
Vonn was .37 of a second slower than Swiss winner Lara Gut on Sunday, one day after Vonn won her first race in nearly two years in a downhill.
“I was late on some turns,” Vonn said. “I carried pretty good speed on the flats, but my timing was off. For all my mistakes, I’m quite happy with second place.”
Slovenia’s Tina Maze finished third, increasing her World Cup overall lead.
Vonn, a four-time World Cup overall champion, moved into fourth place in the overall standings after seven of 34 scheduled races. Mikaela Shiffrin is in fifth place.
Vonn said Saturday that she will not race later this week in a giant slalom and slalom in Are, Sweden. Her next scheduled race is a downhill in Val d’Isere, France, on Dec. 20, though a lack of snow may force it to be moved to a different venue.
“I just need a little more training,” said Vonn, who will return to Colorado to prepare for Val d’Isere. “I’m a solid podium skier right now but just need to get my timing back.”
Vonn, 30, missed the Sochi Olympics following her second right knee surgery in less than a year in January. She owns 60 career World Cup wins, two behind retired Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell‘s women’s record.
Gut, 23, has also overcome major injury en route to an 11th World Cup victory Sunday.
In 2009, Gut won two World Championships silver medals at age 17, making her one of the top challengers to Vonn going into the 2010 Olympics. But she missed those Winter Games after dislocating her right hip in a September 2009 training crash.
Gut won three of the first four World Cup races last season, the best start by a woman in 23 years, among seven overall victories. She earned downhill bronze at the Sochi Olympics.
