Four-time Olympic ski jumping medalist Adam Malysz‘s car caught fire and burned away some 20 miles from the finish line at the second stage of the Dakar Rally in Argentina on Monday, prematurely ending his participation in this year’s race.
The Dakar Rally is the world’s most challenging off-road endurance race. The 13-stage event spans 5,500 miles over three South American countries.
Malysz, reportedly unharmed Monday, appeared in the last three stagings of the Dakar Rally after retiring from ski jumping in 2011.
He won four individual Olympic ski jumping medals over the 2002 and 2010 Winter Games, more than any other Polish male Winter Olympian in a career.
Another Olympic medalist is still in the Dakar Rally. That’s Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah, the 2011 Dakar winner and five-time Olympic shooter who earned skeet bronze at London 2012.
