Tatyana Chernova, the 2011 World heptathlon champion, and Yulia Zaripova, the 2012 Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion, were given backdated two-year doping bans by Russia’s anti-doping agency (RUSADA).
Chernova won the 2011 World heptathlon title over Brit Jessica Ennis. Ennis memorably won the Olympic title a year later in London, with Chernova being relegated to bronze for a second straight Games.
Zaripova won World steeplechase silver in 2009 and gold in 2011, followed by her Olympic gold. RUSADA’s decision disqualifies Zaripova’s results from a period including the 2012 Olympics, which could cost her that gold medal.
Both backdated bans expire before the 2016 Olympics.
