Budapest will host the 2017 FINA World Championships for aquatic sports, including swimming and diving. The Hungarian capital was announced as the replacement for Guadalajara, Mexico, which withdrew last month due to financial concerns.

Hungary is well-known for its water sports, including in water polo and with champion swimmers Katinka Hosszu and Laszlo Cseh.

This summer’s World Championships will be in Kazan, Russia. The 2019 World Championships will be in Gwangju, South Korea. The 2021 World Championships were previously awarded to Budapest, but FINA said Wednesday that bidding process will reopen.

The U.S., the world’s most dominant water sports nation, has never hosted the World Aquatics Championships, which have been staged 15 times since a 1973 debut.
