Allyson Felix, 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 200 meters, may compete in two sprint races at the IAAF World Championships, her coach said in an interview with Reuters.
Bob Kersee said that Felix may attempt to win both the 200 and 400 meters at the August meet in Beijing, despite the difficulty.
“It’s not that impossible. The difficult day would be (August) 27th because you would have the semis in the 200m and an hour later the 400m final.”
“I know a double would be hard,” Kersee said. “But we tried it before in Daegu and I think we know where our mistakes are.” When Felix attempted the double at the 2011 Worlds in Daegu, she settled for bronze in the 200 and silver in the 400.
It will depend on whether the U.S. coaches ask Felix to run in both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
After the relays are determined, Kersee said, “what we do will come down to two relays and one event or two events and one relay.”
Felix won’t face Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the 200, as Fraser-Pryce announced she’ll be focusing on the 100 meters at Worlds. She told the IAAF, “I am only going to do the 100m in Beijing, bearing in mind that next year is the Olympic Games.”
