A Los Angeles-San Francisco joint bid for the 2024 Olympics is possible after a leading Los Angeles 2024 bid official contacted a leading San Francisco 2024 bid official, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
San Francisco Giants CEO Larry Baer said Tuesday he received a call from Los Angeles sports executive Casey Wasserman, according to the report, which said Wasserman floated “the idea of going in on a proposal together.”
“I’m not saying we are going to do it, but we are certainly open to discussing it,” Baer said, according to the newspaper.
Baer and Wasserman helped lead their respective’ cities finalist bids last year to be the 2024 U.S. Olympic bid city. Boston beat Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., to be the U.S. bid in a Jan. 8 announcement.
Boston was dropped in a joint decision with the USOC on Monday after Boston mayor Marty Walsh said he would not sign a document that could put taxpayers at risk if there were cost overruns.
The U.S. Olympic Committee still wants to submit a bid for the 2024 Olympics by the Sept. 15 deadline. The USOC has had talks with Los Angeles officials already, according to insidethegames and the Los Angeles Times.
“We will brief the media on our progress towards a decision later in August, and we will not have any public statements on the subject of a possible bid until then,” USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said in a statement Monday.
