Which 12 players will make up the 2016 U.S. Olympic men’s basketball roster?

The USA Basketball announcement of 34 players expected to attend next week’s national  camp is a strong list from which to start, given USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo has said participation is mandatory for players interested in the Rio Games.

Of the 34 players, eight were on the London Games roster:

Carmelo Anthony
Anthony Davis
Kevin Durant
James Harden
LeBron James
Kevin Love
Chris Paul
Russell Westbrook

The four players from the 2012 Olympic team not on the camp roster are Kobe BryantTyson ChandlerAndre Iguodala and Deron Williams.

Bryant, who will be 38 in 2016, is not expected to want to play in the Rio Olympics.

Additionally, nine more players on the 34-player camp roster were on the team that won the 2014 FIBA World Cup:

DeMarcus Cousins
Stephen Curry
DeMar DeRozan
Andre Drummond
Kenneth Faried
Rudy Gay
Kyrie Irving
Mason Plumlee
Klay Thompson

The one player from the 2014 World Cup team not on the camp roster is Derrick Rose, who was reportedly undecided about going to the camp last week.

Another absentee is Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard, who was among the final cuts for the 2014 World Cup team and reportedly said he doesn’t think he’s part of a potential team.

The 2012 U.S. Olympic champion team included five players from the 2010 FIBA World Championship team.

All 12 players on the 2008 U.S. Olympic champion team were among the 32 senior national team players from 2007. The 2008 Olympic team also included six players from the 2006 FIBA World Championship team.
