IAAF awards gala canceled

The annual IAAF awards gala in Monaco, set for Nov. 28, has been canceled, the organization confirmed Friday.

The announcement came after Lamine Diack, the IAAF president from 1999 until being succeeded by Seb Coe earlier this year, was placed under criminal investigation on suspicion of taking more than $1 million in bribes from Russia to cover up positive doping tests.

“Given the cloud that hangs over our association this is clearly not the time for the global athletics family to be gathering in celebration of our sport,” Coe said in a press release. “However we will rightly still honour the outstanding achievements of the sport’s athletes. Therefore the Athlete of the Year and other annual honours will still be awarded and will be promoted and announced on the internet and social media. The IAAF will seek a suitable occasion in the future for the presentation of these awards to be made to the winners.”

Annual athlete of the year awards are announced and IAAF Hall of Fame inductees are usually honored at the gala.
