Mal Whitfield, an American who won three Olympic track and field gold medals and five overall, died at age 91 on Wednesday, according to the IAAF.
Whitfield won 1948 and 1952 Olympic 800m titles (the former in an Olympic record time, the latter matching it) and was part of the 1948 4x400m relay gold medal-winning team. He also took silver in the 1952 Olympic 4x400m and bronze in the 1948 Olympic 400m.
Whitfield competed at the London 1948 Olympics as an Air Force Sergeant, becoming the first U.S. serviceman to win gold on active duty.
