That’s how NBC Olympics gymnastics analyst Tim Daggett described the London 2012 vault final, where McKayla Maroney fell on the second of her two vaults.
“There was no more of a guaranteed gold coming into the Olympic Games in gymnastics than McKayla Maroney on vault,” Daggett said on the broadcast.
Maroney of course settled for silver behind Romanian Sandra Izbasa and later smirked on the second step of the podium during the medal ceremony, igniting the “not impressed” meme.
“My first thought was, well, I guess I’m going to the next Olympics,” Maroney said in 2014.
But Maroney last year ended her bid to return for Rio and grab that lost gold, announcing her retirement in a video published Wednesday.
“If you ask me if I could go back and win a gold, I would say, no thank you,” Maroney said in 2014. “I love my silver medal, and I love what’s happened, and it’s made me a stronger person.”
“There’s definitely moments in your life that changed it, and that was definitely No. 1.”
