Karl Malone‘s shaved head was a revelation the last time Marv Albert called an Olympic basketball game on NBC.
Albert returns to cover Olympic basketball for NBC for the first time since Atlanta 1996 this summer.
Twenty years ago, Albert and Hall of Famer Bill Walton and former NBA player and coach Matt Guokas were on the broadcast for the Olympic men’s basketball final between the U.S. and Yugoslavia.
The U.S. would, as expected, eventually easily defeat Yugoslavia, 95-69, so the pregame hype wasn’t all about the showdown.
Part of it was about Malone, the Utah Jazz star who shaved his head between the semifinals and final after his teammates called out his receding hairline.
In a true time-capsule intro, the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight” was a backdrop for U.S. stars discussing the importance of being Olympians.
