With Sweden picking up three points with a 1-0 win over South Africa in the first match of the Olympic women’s soccer competition, Brazil and China will look to do the same in their Group E match Wednesday afternoon (3:00 p.m. ET on USA). In addition to being available on USA Network, the match will also be streamed on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.
The Rio Olympics provide Brazilian star Marta and her teammates the opportunity to perform in a major tournament on home soil, and they enter the Olympics looking to win their first gold medal in the event. Brazil won silver in both 2004 and 2008, but like the men they’ve yet to hear their national anthem played in an Olympic women’s soccer tournament since the event was first played in 1996.
Their opener against China won’t be a walk in the park however, as the Chinese arrive in Rio just four spots below Brazil in the FIFA world rankings. Brazil is currently ranked eighth, with China being ranked 12th.
