USA women fall to Fiji 12-7 in Olympic rugby debut

Alev Kelter recorded the first try in Team USA women’s rugby sevens Olympic history, but the U.S. fell to Fiji 12-7 in Group A play at the Deodoro Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

An forward pass from the U.S. midway through the first half set Fiji up for its first try, and the Americans trailed 7-0 at halftime.

Fiji picked up another try within a minute, but failed on the kick as the lead went to 12. The Yanks answered back quickly, with star Kelter putting Team USA on the board.

The U.S. is in Group A with Australia, Colombia, and Fiji, and needs to finish Top Two for an instant berth into the knockout rounds.

Later today, the U.S. will face Colombia before a Sunday match-up with Australia.

Two of three third-place teams will also advance.
