On Day three of the Rio Olympics, the host nation has its first gold medalist in these Games.
Judoka Rafaela Silva won gold in the women’s 57 kg competition, beating Mongolia’s Sumiya Dorjsuren in the gold medal match. Brazil now has two total medals in these Olympics, with Felipe Almeida winning a silver medal in the men’s 10 meter air pistol competition. Silva’s waza-ari in the first minute of the match proved to be the difference, and she did not surrender a single score in any of her five matches in the tournament.
A judo gold medalist in the 2013 World Championships, Silva can now add an Olympic gold medal to her rèsumè.
Dorjsuren’s silver medal is the first medal of any kind in women’s judo for her country. Winning the bronze medal matches were Portugal’s Telma Monteiro and Japan’s Kaori Matsumoro, with Monteiro winning Portugal’s first-ever medal in women’s judo.
