Early Friday morning it was announced that a swimmer has failed a drug test at the Rio Olympics.
According to the Associated Press, the Chinese Swimming Association announced that 18-year old swimmer Chen Xinyi has failed a drug test and will not be competing anymore in Rio. Chen, who was supposed to swim in the women’s 50 free preliminary heats Friday, finished fourth in the 100 meter butterfly final Sunday.
Per the report, Chen tested positive for the diuretic hydrocorothiazide. She has requested that her B sample be tested in hopes of being cleared of any wrongdoing.
Chen won gold in three event at the 2014 Asian Games, the 50 free, 100 butterfly and 4×100 free, and she was also a member of the team that won gold in the 4×100 medley at last year’s World Championships. With the 4×100 medley also being contested Friday (semifinal heats), China will have an adjustment to make had the plan been to have Chen swim one of the four legs.
The Rio Olympics were Chen’s first appearance at an Olympic Games.
