At the age of 13 budding swimmer Joseph Schooling met Michael Phelps, who at the time was a role model of his. Eight years later the kid in that photo is now a gold medalist, as he ended Phelps’ Olympic gold medal streak in the 100 meter butterfly.
Schooling, who posted the best time of the semifinal heats as well, finished in 50.39 seconds in establishing a new Olympic record. Schooling’s gold medal is also Singapore’s first ever Olympic swimming medal, and it’s also the nation’s first Olympic gold medal in any sport.
