Gabby Douglas admits to being stung by social media criticism

Gabby Douglas is a gold medal winner again, but that hasn’t stopped the online world from spitting vitriol her way.

The American gymnast, 20, won team gold yet has found her performance just cannot win over her critics.

Sometimes it’s her body language that doesn’t suit their needs. Other times, it’s whether she remembers to put her hand over heart.

And other times, it’s her actual physical appearance (which is pretty troubling, although admittedly not entirely unexpected, in 2016).

From the Associated Press:

“When they talk about my hair or not putting my hand over my heart or being very salty in the stands, really criticizing me … for me it was really hurtful,” Douglas said.

She later added: “Did I choose my hair texture? No. I’m grateful for having this hair on my head. When you read that hurtful stuff you’re like ‘OK, wow.'”

The instant response, wrongly, would be to tell her to get off the Internet. Instead, perhaps we can all just be a bit more thoughtful about how we’d look with 100 cameras around us at work.
